– Changes she’d made in her fitness routine

+ so much more!

Here’s a little bit about Bethann:

In a past life, I worked in the tech industry, the fitness industry and the fashion industry. Now I blend them all together blogging and vlogging about style, beauty, fitness and wellness on bethanimalprint.com.

I believe in sharing life’s authentic moments with you, as I find there needs to be more of that in this social media driven world. When I’m not chasing kids around or hustling through the influencer grind, I’m looking for ways to be more eco-friendly. I’ve recently challenged myself to give up shopping for a whole year.  It’s given me more more time for things I really love, like weightlifting, eating tacos (the perfect food), hanging out with my crazy family or sipping on a big ‘ole glass of local red wine.

Pregnancy exercises (+ a prenatal workout video)

This is a prenatal workout video you can do anywhere! Filled with pregnancy exercises and safe ideas for your prenatal workouts. As always, talk with a doctor before making any fitness changes.

Hey hey! I’ve got a new workout video for you today! This is for all of my friends with a bun in the oven that still want to get in a good workout. (I have to admit that while I was pregnant, I pressed “stop” on so many prenatal workouts because they just felt like a huge yawn.) This is a friendly reminder that even though I designed this with pregnant mamas in mind, you need to check with your doctor to make sure these exercises are safe for you. Pregnancy isn’t the time to add; it’s a great time to focusing on maintaining.

PREGNANCY WORKOUT VIDEO + tips for prenatal exercise

For some of my tips of working out while pregnant, check out these posts:

Core training during pregnancy

Can you work out on your back during pregnancy?

Keep the intensity, lose the impact

Best pregnancy stretches

(typing “pregnancy” and “pregnant” so many times reminds me of this gem lol)

For the workout below, you can absolutely do this workout if you’re not expecting. These are some of my very favorite moves when I want to get back to basics and draw attention to my core. These are also some effective and safe postpartum exercises (if your doc gives the ok, of course).

Now, let’s get into the video! I’m so excited that my friend Katie (33 weeks when we filmed this!) could join me for this one.

Press play and work out with us. 🙂

(Leggings are here // tank is here)

Form cues and tips:

This workout is split into 3 7-minute blocks:

7 minutes of strength

7 minutes of barre

7 minutes of smart core work

This may vary a little from the actual video – for the barre and core segments I just taught like I was teaching a class without a focus on reps – but here’s what it looks like if you’d like to try it out on your own or pin/save for a rainy day:

the Tucson blizzard of 2019

Hey hey! How was the weekend? I hope you had a wonderful one.

Ours started off with SNOW! I couldn’t believe it when we woke up and opened the curtains to see that huge flakes of snow were falling into the yard.

Snow in tucson

The Pilot’s southern side comes out every now and again, and he said they looked like, “Big ‘ol goose feathers.”

Snow day

It continued to snow throughout the morning and for the rest of the day!

In the snow

We bundled up the girls to let them play for a bit, and then brought them inside to eat breakfast, watch a movie, and sip hot cocoa. We stayed snuggled up indoors, enjoying the show that was happening in the yard, and finally left mid-afternoon to meet some friends for rock climbing at Bloc.

Rock climbing

It was the girls’ second time rock climbing (we went last week, too) and they basically seemed like professionals this go around. (Speaking of professionals, I could see some of the people who came in to rock climb, you know, like as a hobby/skill and they basically Spiderman-ed their entire way around the gym. One girl was UPSIDE DOWN climbing. I was v. impressed and would prob break my face.)

We came back home for a bit, dropped the Pilot off for a much-needed massage, and then P and I dropped Livi off at a friends’ house. After the Pilot finished his appointment, we took P for her first Indian food experience.

Indian food w the rose

We went to Saffron, which we haven’t had since Liv was a toddler, and it was everrryyyyything. I can never go this long without Indian food in my life ever again.

Saffron

We had pappadum + dippers, the Pilot ordered this tandoori plate with lamb, shrimp, and chicken, P chose the kids’ chicken biryani, and I rolled with the classic chicken tikka masala. Everything was cooked perfectly – it was the type of meal that you could try to replicate a thousand times at home and it would never taste the same – and P was a huge fan. We’ll definitely be back with Liv soon! After gelato at Frost, we picked up Liv and called it a night.

Onesies

(I got the ridiculous onesie on sale after the holidays and now when it’s cold, P tells me to wear my Olaf pajamas.)

Saturday morning, I took an early Orangetheory class.

Mountains

(I couldn’t believe that the mountains were entirely blanketed in snow. Where do we live?! This never happens.)

With all of the traveling + our dark period of unsuccessful sleep training, I hadn’t been to OTF in a few weeks. Saturday’s workout was a huge reality check. It felt SO challenging, but I loved the workout. We had heavy strength on the floor, rowing and plyo on the rowers, and hills + sprints on the treads.

Otf esp

We had breakfast at home and then got ready to head to the planetarium. It was one of our frequent stops during the deployment, but it was the Pilot’s first time. We watched the Perfect Little Planet show in the main theatre and wandered around the exhibits. After lunch at home and catching up on work and chores, we met up with friends at Bear Canyon Pizza for dinner.

Sunday, we had church with the fam, Peter Piper Pizza (to celebrate the fact that P stayed in her room all night!), grocery blitz (so we could finally cook at home again after a lot of restaurant dining lately) and I hopped on the Peloton for a 45-minute ride. I’m pretty sure I’ll never get sick of the Peloton workouts. I’m 102 rides in and still feel just as pumped each time!

Shiny new PR

Sunday night was family dinner at our house. 🙂 Kyle, Meg, Everly, Madre, Paul, Nana, Tata, and Trev all come over for dinner, drinks and to watch the basketball game.

Fam

We had chips, salsa, and guac:

Guac and chips

(my guac recipe is here. It’s the same one I’ve used for years)

burgers,

IMG 1528

a huge salad,

Italian easy salad

(I just topped mixed greens with sliced roasted red bell pepper, feta, kalamata olives, garbanzo beans, salt, pepper, and fresh basil)

Kyle’s famous mac n’ cheese,

Mac n cheese

he also made this homemade blue cornbread that was INSANE,

Kyles cornbread

and for dessert: a volcano!!

Volcano

We decided we needed to do one to celebrate the Pilot being back in town…for good this time. It feels so weird and amazing that he doesn’t have a plane ticket to go anywhere right now! I kinda like having him around.

ACS 0182

So if you haven’t encountered a volcano, here’s how they work:

– you bake a pan of brownies and let it cool

– when you’re ready to serve, get a large platter and pile ice cream into a cone shape. Cut the brownies into large strips and place them on top of the ice cream. Top with whipped cream, caramel sauce, chocolate syrup, and sparklers or candles.

– turn the lights out, light the sparklers, and present it to the group while everyone chants, “VOLCANO! VOLCANO!”

Volcanoooo

And that’s how ya do it.

Today, I’m in content writing mode and also teaching a HIIT class later today. I’m excited to watch The Bachelor tonight even though at this point, I feel bad for the poor guy. What a weird season!

I hope you have a happy Monday and I’ll see ya in the morning with a prenatal workout video.

xoxo

Friday Faves

Helloooooo. How are you? I hope you’re having a wonderful Friday. The girls are off school today and also had yesterday off for rodeo vacation. Rodeo is a big deal in Tucson – we used to go to the parade when I was younger but that’s all I’ve really experienced – and it’s definitely a Tucson thing to get two days off school for rodeo. (I was also realllllyyyyyyy tempted to pack up the fam for San Diego this morning, but we’ll be hanging out around here this weekend.)

Yesterday, I took the girls with me to Telos so I could get in a workout. (A couple of friends also brought their kids, so they colored and hung out together.) After an intense strength workout and circuit, we headed to Get Air so the girls could jump their hearts out + acai bowls at Pure Love Juice.

Juice

(P’s face is all of us)

Today we’ll probably get into some more adventures. The girls requested rock climbing and the Pilot is back from another trip to Georgia. He had to go back and forth a couple of times for work so he was gone again all week, but thankfully the traveling is FINALLY done (for now). We can actually find a bit of a routine and also start the new sleep plan from the specialist (pray for my soul k thanks).

It’s time for the weekly Friday Faves party! This is where I share some of my fave reads, wears, finds, and eats from the week. I love hearing about your faves, too, if you’d like to shout out something you’re lovin’ in the comments section.

Family:

– All of your amazing comments on the homecoming video here on the blog, and also on Instagram. It was so much fun to put together and I know it will be something we look back on years later.

(Yes, the Pilot stopped in Ireland on the way back! He got the CUTEST sweaters for the girls and said it was incredibly beautiful and the people were so kind and wonderful. I definitely would love to visit eventually.)

Fitness:

I tried 3 workout apps, and here’s what happened. Quite a few great reviews for Obe in the comments section. I’ll give it a whirl and report back!

My favorite functional core exercises.

Good eats:

This chicken marinade is bomb.

A simple weeknight dinner recipe.

Can’t wait to try this green curry.

Fashion + beauty:

Love this striped top for spring!

I ordered P another pair of her favorite rain boots and these ones for Livi. I think it’s rained more this year in Tucson than it ever has, so they’re definitely getting a lot of wear.

How cute is this swimsuit and this one? <— I’m always on the lookout for a “mom suit” I can wear and chase my kids around the beach while still looking cute

Scoping out these flats (similar to the ones I got last summer) but not sure what color to get. Probably nude because let’s be real, I’m not that shoe-adventurous.

Read, listen, watch:

Roma.

OH, ROMA. It was just one of those movies that sticks with you, and I appreciated the slower pace that wasn’t so “in your face”; it was almost meditative. The story immediately captured me, and while some parts were difficult to watch, it really tugged at my heart and was beautifully done. I’m excited to watch the Oscars this weekend and see how some of my favorite movies from the year fare. (I loooooved the music in A Star is Born and totally think that Rami Malek needs to win for Bohemian Rhapsody. A quick google search told me he was in Twilight: Breaking Dawn and Night at the Museum and I think he’s paid his dues haha.)

Incredibly feature on Beautycounter! If you’re looking to clean up your skincare, hit me up. <3

Hope you have a happy Friday and a great weekend!

the homecoming video

AHHH I have so many feels posting this video. It takes me back to a little under one month ago, when we flew to the east coast to welcome the Pilot home. That week was filled with equal excitement and disbelief that after 7 long months, he’d be holding us in his arms again.

2018 128

We had a lot of fun putting this one together and, of course, we had to use a song from our beloved Coco. It still makes me cry every time I watch that movie with the kiddos because it’s our family on the screen. (If you’ve ever been at nana’s house while she piles more tamales onto your plate after you say, “No, thank you” you know what I mean.)

So happy and thankful our favorite guy is home safely. If you’re going through a deployment, I’m sending you so much love and prayers for a safe return, and an incredible reunion.

Special thanks to Lindsay Colson for taking beautiful photos, and to Damian Gray from Film Story for taking such fantastic video with my iPhone. Thank you for being there with our fam and helping us capture such a memorable day.

Some Big News From Greatist

I've got some big news to share.

Greatist has been acquired by Healthline, one of the best and biggest health sites out there.

It's no doubt a wild ride for digital publishers these days, and we're excited to partner with a brand that's so complementary to ours. Healthline is great at scale, quality, resources, and profitability—all things that make them a smart business for us to align with! Oh, and we're hopeful some of Greatist's strengths, like our strong brand and voice, will have some influence here too. I'm sure our brand will evolve in the coming months—that's always the way it works—but we're excited for Greatist to grow while maintaining its soul and important message.

When I started Greatist eight years ago, I set out to build a brand in health and wellness that would make you feel better about yourself instead of worse. A brand that spoke to you like a friend who's just a little further along. A brand that encouraged you to improve and celebrated when you got even a little better. Since then, the health space has changed an awful lot. Wowza. Health is cool now! (Even salads, I think!) And while a lot of what's new in health is presented through an uncertain Instagram filter, it's heartwarming to know a lot has improved for the better. And I'd like to think we played a role in pushing the right narrative forward.

I couldn't be more proud of what Greatist and its extraordinary team have accomplished, from day 1 to whatever-the-heck day it is now. And I'm excited about how the space will continue to change. As our Healthline chapter begins, I'll be taking a break before starting work on my next great brand that does good (if you'd like to keep up with what I do next, sign up here).

Thank you all for an amazing, unforgettable ride—and thank you all for being such a greatist.

A Beginner's Guide to Meal Prep

If finding the time to pack lunch every morning or cook dinner every night is impossible, or you're relying on takeout more than you want to, you're probably ready to jump on the meal-prep train. As you should! Except, um, how do you get started? If you’ve never done it before, meal-prepping can feel overwhelming. But it’s not, really. Here’s everything you need to know to succeed.

What is meal prep, and why should I try it?

Meal prep is exactly what it sounds like: prepping your meals (or meal components) ahead of time so your food is ready to eat whenever you are. The easiest way to do it? Pick a day when you’re free—usually a Saturday or Sunday—to prep enough food to get you through the upcoming week.

People love meal-prepping because it makes life easy. Trying to figure out what to make for dinner every night can be stressful, and finding the time to make it can be even more so. Meal-prepping means you get all the work out of the way ahead of time. Instead of taking time to think about food and cooking during the week, everything’s already there.

Planning your meals ahead of time can make it easier to eat healthier too. “We tend to make better choices for our future selves than we do for our current selves,” says Georgie Fear, RD, CSSD, author of Lean Habits for Lifelong Weight Loss. It’s easy to succumb to takeout or frozen pizza when you’re exhausted after a long day. But you’ll probably be motivated to make better choices—say, salmon and quinoa or chicken and pepper fajitas—when you map out your menu in advance.

How to Meal-Prep

Prepping several days’ worth of food all at once might seem like an overwhelming task. But it’s actually pretty simple once you get the hang of it. Here’s a step-by-step guide to getting started.

1. Gear up.

Despite what some meal-prep guides might say, you don’t need to shell out for tons of new products before beginning. That said, having the right tools can be pretty helpful. Consider stocking up on these items, if you don’t already have them on hand.

  • One or two large sheet pans. Use them to roast veggies, proteins, or full sheet-pan meals.
  • A big stockpot. It’s key for one-pot meals like soups, stews, curry, or chili.
  • A medium sauce pot. Use it for cooking whole grains or making hard-boiled eggs.
  • Glass storage containers with sturdy lids. They’re your best options for storing prepped food. (And, unlike plastic, they won’t leach chemicals into your food.) Aim to have a variety of sizes for storing big and small batches of prepped items.
  • Zip-top bags. Small ones are great for portioning out snacks like nuts or sliced veggies. Bigger ones are good for storing whole meals or individual components if you run out of storage containers (or run out of room for more containers in your fridge).

2. Plan your menu.

Before you begin cooking, you need to figure out what you’re going to make. Aim to have a protein, a vegetable, and a starch for each meal—the combo will help you stay satisfied, says nutrition expert Kelly Jones, MS, RD. As for what to cook, exactly? The sky’s the limit, but in general, the most successful meal-prep meals fall into one of these categories:

  • One-pot or one-pan meals: Think soups, curry, chili, oatmeal, or anything else that you can cook in a single pot or Crock-Pot. “They’re always a great option because you don’t need to add anything to the meal other than condiments,” Jones says. Sheet-pan meals and frittatas (bake them in a big pan and cut into slices, or make individual servings in muffin tins) work here too. If you want simplicity to the max, this is the route to go, Fear says.
  • Component-based meals: Want a little more variety? Try prepping proteins, vegetables, and starches individually for mixing and matching. For instance, pre-chopped veggies can top a pizza on Monday, be mixed into pasta sauce on Tuesday, and folded into tacos on Wednesday, Fear says. And since a plain bowl of quinoa, veggies, and chicken or tempeh can get kind of boring, plan to make a few sauces, dressings, or toppings to keep things interesting from a flavor perspective, Jones says.

Do you have to map out every single thing you’re going to eat for the entire week? Nope. “Having a plan for most meals may be helpful for some people, but it’s important, especially when starting to meal-prep, that you start small,” Jones says.

So if tackling five or even seven days seems like way too much, start by prepping just two dinners. Double the ingredients so you can eat each dinner twice, and bam! You’ve got four nights covered.

3. Shop and cook.

With your menu planned, it’s time to make a grocery list and go shopping. Think through all the items you’ll be cooking and write down all the ingredients you’ll need. This is key! Having an actual list (versus trying to keep track of everything in your head) ups the odds that you’ll actually come home with everything you need—and won’t waste time running back to the store later on.

When it’s time to cook, think about ways to maximize your efficiency as much as possible. “Meal-prepping shouldn’t take more than one to two hours if you multitask the right way,” Jones says. (These recipes only take 15 minutes from start to finish!) If you’re firing up the oven, roast vegetables and bake chicken or tofu at the same time. Then start a pot of quinoa or soup on the stovetop. While that simmers, pre-chop fruits or veggies or whip up a batch of hummus for snacking, she suggests.

4. Pack it up.

Got your food all prepped? Congrats! Now it’s time to store everything so you’ll have easy access to your meals and ingredients throughout the week. Three important tips to keep in mind:

  1. Utilize the right containers. Portion out single servings into small individual containers, which are easy to grab and go, Jones says. Dinners you’ll serve in one big batch can go in bigger containers.
  2. Keep salads and dressings separate. Storing already-dressed salad is a recipe for a soggy, wilted mess, Fear says. Keep everything fresh by packing chopped salad veggies in one container and dressing in another.
  3. Cool before refrigerating. It’s fine to transfer hot food straight to your glass storage vessels. But let the food come to room temperature before moving it to the fridge—especially when it comes to big batches. Popping a family-size serving of, say, piping hot chili into the fridge will warm up everything that’s already in there, Fear says. That could potentially set the stage for spoilage and food poisoning.

5. Eat strategically.

You’ve got all this delicious food at the ready—so what should you eat first? “Most things can be prepared in advance and stay safe to eat for five days,” Fear says. Still, animal-based proteins often tend to lose their luster the quickest. So consider eating your meatier meals earlier in the week and saving plant-based proteins for later on, Jones recommends.

Of course, it’s always a good idea to use your judgment. If something looks or smells suspect, don’t eat it—even if it’s only been sitting in the fridge for a day or two. Use this guide to determine how long food really lasts.

10 barre workouts you can do at home

This is a collection of barre workouts that you can use while you’re traveling, working out at home, or looking to change things up at the gym. Lots of video workouts here, too! All you need is a mat and a pair of light dumbbells.

Hi friends! Hope you’re having a wonderful morning. It’s freezing here in Tucson (!) so we’ll be bundled up indoors and finishing the homecoming video. (It should be up on the blog on Thursday!) I’ll prob hop on the Peloton bike later today and also record a podcast interview. I’d love to hear what you’re up to this fine Tuesday and if you have any guests you’d like to hear on an upcoming podcast episode!

For today’s post, I thought I’d share some of my favorite barre workouts and videos for my fellow barre-loving friends. I’ve posted a ton of barre workouts here on the blog over the years, and I love how much barre always challenges me and how versatile it is. Barre was one of the few workouts that felt good for my pregnancies and strengthening ALL of the muscles in your legs can help support various other activities, whether you like to lift, run, spin, hike, dance, or practice yoga.

10 barre workouts you can do anywhere

Here are 10 barre workouts you can do anywhere. All you need is a mat, a pair of light dumbbells, and something sturdy to hold onto for balance.

1) 10-minute barre abs workout (with video)

Barre ab burner

This workout combines all of my beloved barre ab moves. It’s a quick video and makes an awesome ab burner after a cardio or strength workout, or even if you just want to do something quick before bed.

2) Full-length barre and Pilates workout (with video)

Barre legs and booty workout

This is one of the closest videos I have on the blog to taking a full class! If you’ve been curious about taking class at a local studio, try this first and see if you think it’s a fit!

3) Total body barre workout (with video)

This is a 25-minute video that will work your entire body. This is one of my go-to sequences when I know I’m short on time but want to get an awesome burn.

4) A total body barre blast

2017 99 ZF 1976 79294 1 098

All you need is a pair or dumbbells for this one! It’s a text image so you can take it to the gym with you or try it at home.

5) Classic at-home barre workout

Classic barre workout

This workout combines all of the *classic* barre moves that felt very dancer-esque and made me fall in love with barre in the first place.

6) Tabata-style barre workout (with video)

Tabata style barre workout with video

This workout combines Tabata intervals with challenging barre strength work. It’s a very effective method for workouts if you don’t have a lot of time.

7) Barre strength workout (with video)

Bare strength 1 of 1

This workout contains barre strength endurance work. The combo of low reps and high weights helps to build strong lean muscle without needing to lift super heavy weights. It’s also a great way to change up your training if you’re more used to traditional hypertrophy work.

8) Total body barre workout (using the Fit Tower)

Barre workout 12

While this workout uses the Fit Tower, you can absolutely do the exercises without it!

9) Cardio barre workout

Jump

This workout combines cardio elements with strength for a great calorie burn and metabolism boost following the workout.

10) Barre HIIT workout you can do anywhere

Barre hiit workout 2

This is another HIIT and barre combo that I love! Your heart rate will remain elevated during the strength work so you sweat more and get in a solid cardio and strength combination. Many barre classes are lower in cardio and this is the best of both worlds.

So, tell me friends: are you a barre fan? If you had to only work out at one studio or gym for the rest of your life, what would you pick?

all in a weekend’s work

Hi friends! How’s the morning going? Hope you had a wonderful weekend. It was a packed one over here; filled with family adventures. I’d love to hear what you were up to! The highlights of my weekend: celebrating Valentine’s Day with the girls (we celebrated with the Pilot on Friday since he was gone until Thursday night), filming new workout videos for you, a girls’ night, and a date night. Wins all around.

Vday

My lil valentines

(Valentine’s Day, I took the girls to Sweet Tomatoes, their favorite place, for dinner and then madre hung out with them while I went over to Meg’s for cheese board + wine and picked the Pilot up from the airport)

Friday it rained all day, so we met up with friends for a morning at Jump. The kiddos jumped their little hearts out and when P hit her nap wall, we rolled out for Pita Jungle on the way home and a sleep consultation call. We chatted with Heather from Sleep Shop and she was LOVELY. She was so kind and understanding – apparently, our myriad of sleep issues are very common – and we finished the call feeling empowered and like we have an action plan in place. The Pilot still has a little bit of traveling coming up, so we’re waiting until he’s home for good to start the new routine, but I’ll definitely report back on our progress. I’m also thankful that we have a follow-up with Heather after we begin so she can provide any insight or ideas if (= when) we run into obstacles.

Friday night, we took the girls rock climbing! It was their first time and they were INTO IT. I never really know how they’ll respond to new activities (would the heights freak them out or would they feel frustrated that they can’t grab onto the rocks easily?) but no. They climbed those walls like little spider monkeys and had the best time. I think it will definitely become a *thing* around here. They climbed for about an hour and a half, and then we wandered to Bear Canyon Pizza for dinner.

Rock climbing

Rock climbing 2

Saturday morning, Liv had two birthday parties in a row. It’s officially begun. The Pilot took Liv to her first party at the jump place, and then P and I joined them for the second bowling party. (P and I would have chilled at home, but the invitation said siblings were welcome, so it was a fun treat.) I always underestimate bowling as a family activity, which is silly because every time we go, it’s a blast. (Also why does bowling alley pizza taste so good?) The kiddos bowled, P ran around the arcade, they had pizza and cake, and we headed home for a nap.
Saturday night, I met up with some girlfriends for dinner at Downtown Kitchen + Cocktails:

(always the salmon + a margarita)

and then we saw Ali Wong!

No pictures from the event because they locked up our phones at security. Apparently, this is becoming a thing now to prevent photos and videos being taken during the show, but it’s also how you give a person with anxiety even more anxiety: lock up their phone. They give it to you in a little gray fabric pouch that you can access at phone stations in the lobby, but it was still super weird. It was on vibrate so I could feel if someone was calling, but still kind of unsettling. Anyway, the show was hilarious. I laughed so hard I was crying, and there was also a guy in the balcony that had the most enthusiastic cackle that made all of us giggle even more. I can’t wait for her next Netflix special.
Sunday, we were super lazy and it was super beautiful. We were in our pajamas until 1pm, we had pancakes and eggs, and the kiddos watched a movie while we worked editing the homecoming video.

After a walk at Sabino Canyon,

I met up with Grant and Katie to film some videos! We have barre, HIIT + strength, and prenatal workouts coming your way. 🙂
Filming
After filming, the Pilot picked me up and we had a little date at Roadhouse. It was his first time and I was so pumped to introduce him to the jalapeño popcorn. Needless to say, he was a fan.

We saw Bohemian Rhapsody and were both completely blown away. The cast was incredible and it was over too quickly. I had to remind myself that I was watching a movie and not a documentary; the leading actor was that good. I highly recommend it!

Hope you have a happy Monday and I’ll see ya soon!
