Friday Faves 3.29

Hi friends! Happy Friday! How was the week? Ours was a whirlwind, but SO much fun.

I had our choir performance last Friday, drove Liv to Phoenix for her dance competition early Saturday morning, spent the night, the Pilot and I P drove up, I rushed home for our Sunday performance while they stayed in Phoenix for Day 2 of dance competition,

I took the shuttle from Tucson to Phoenix early Monday morning, they swooped me at the airport, we drove to Anaheim for Disney fun for a couple of days, then to San Diego for a couple of days. We’re finally back home after a super fun adventure and spring break!

It definitely felt good to sleep in our bed last night and I’m looking forward to a low-key Easter weekend with the fam. I’d love to hear what you’ve been up to!

It’s time for the weekly Friday Faves party! This is where I share some of my favorite finds from the week and around the web. I always love to hear about your faves, too, so please shout out something you’re loving in the comments section below.

Friday Faves 3.29

Spring Break vacation:

Some pics from the Disney and San Diego adventures:

We had our usual Goofy’s Kitchen dinner (so good and such a fun way to kick off the trip!)

With my best girls:

These kids RALLIED. We shut down Disneyland and got back to the hotel at 1am. We then proceeded to sleep until 10am the next day lol.

This dreamy vegan ice cream from Moniker / Craft Creamery in Point Loma:

(I loved it so much, I ordered 8 pints online. It’s organic soy ice cream, and while the ingredients aren’t the best I’ve seen, it’s ice cream. The link to the creamery is here if you want to treat yourself!)

Beach time on Coronado:

Always the Best Drink Ever, half sweet:

and the best poke we’ve had in San Diego from It’s Raw in Point Loma:

We also had an amazing dinner of OB Noodle House takeout at Betsy’s house with our Kleiger fam.

It was the perfect trip!

Read, watch, listen:

Still loving this book and am absolutely sucked in. It might be my second favorite of hers, after The Nightingale. It’s beautifully written and the story is captivating; definitely check it out if you enjoy historical fiction.

What are your five most rewatchable movies?

Hope and encouragement for hard times.

Fitness, health, + good eats:

21-day Dr. Cabral detox recap and recipes

EquiLife is having their Founder’s Sale right now and you can stack my code FITNESSISTA10 onto current offers (products only; it doesn’t work on labs since they’re heavily discounted during the sale)

Here are some of the things I’d recommend:

The 7-day detox. It’s perfect for a little “spring cleaning” and a great way to help remove toxins and restore deficiencies, while giving your liver a little extra love. This was my introduction to EquiLife (along with my IHP certifications) and I’ve been a fan ever since. My clients have also had incredible success with this detox!

Universal Binder! I love this before sauna sessions, hot yoga, or when I’m going to eat something I don’t typically consume (like alcohol or fried food).

Full-spectrum magnesium. I take this every night and sleep like a baby 🙂 It’s improtant to use a balanced magensium which includes different forms. They all have a different purpose and work together.

Daily Nutritional Support. I have this every day, as a protein pudding (mixed with some Truvani or NOW Foods protein), in my oatmeal, or in a smoothie. It’s packed with vitamins and nutrients and makes an awesome daily multivitamin.

The best weighted blanket. It’s so cozy and can also help protect from EMFs.

Big 5 labs and Starter Kit discount. This is one of the only times that the five major labs are discounted together. You can purchase the labs with those links, and if you’d like me to be the one to go over them with you, please email me before ordering (gina@fitnessista.com subject LABS). I can include my Vitality platform for you, a coaching call, and can make sure your results are tracked to me.

Deviled egg potato salad.

Easter recipe ideas!

Fashion + beauty:

Beautycounter clean eau de parfum is HERE. This launch is 10 years in the making and they didn’t want to launch fragrance until they could do it right. With Beautycounter, this means with the cleanest possible ingredients and rigorous testing for safety. The new scents are so beautiful, and so different (!), with excellent staying power. Get a discovery set here for $40 and you can try them all!

Happy Friday, friends! Have a wonderful weekend and I’ll see ya soon!

Motivation tips for group fitness instructors

Motivation Tips For Group Fitness Instructors

For today’s post, I wanted to talk about motivation tips for group fitness instructors: what I’ve found to work in my years of teaching, what only works for some people, and what falls flat, no matter what. I would love to hear your thoughts and experience as group fitness participants or fellow instructors!! Whether you’re leading through a screen, like many instructors are after Rona, or in person, motivation strategies are super important. You want to transmit energy and inspire individuals and group exercise participants both effectively and authentically.

What works (almost) every time:

Use great music with a diverse playlist.

This is one of my favorite things to do! Include a mix of music in your playlists, because someone in class will love the *weird song* you picked. For example, I’ll throw in a random oldies or country song just to keep things fun, and will also try to mix up top 40s music with more alternative and instrumental styles. If you make an entire playlist based on one genre (like EDM or top 40s) one person in class will love every song, but one person will hate every song and possibly never come back.

Call out participants by their names.

I think it’s so much more meaningful this way and shows participants that you care about them.

Acknowledge their hard work and push them to take it up within a safe level.

I talk more about this here! It’s SO important to encourage participants to listen to their body, modify as needed, and be proud of them for showing up!!!

Demonstrate proper form and ways to modify or progress an exercise.

When participants have confidence in the moves and know they’re not setting themselves up for injury, it’s more motivating. 😉

Emphasizing the muscle group they’re working.

Explain why it’s important (“a strong core helps protect our low back and support everyday movements”), and helping them put their mind to muscle.

Just be quiet.

Sometimes it motivating and powerful to be quiet for a bit and let the energy and music do the talking for you.

What works sometimes, depending on the vibe and your personality:

The more “woo” side of things, like visualizations.

During a spin class, sometimes I’ll say something like, “Imagine the people you love standing on the side of the road right now holding a sign to inspire you. What does the sign say?” Or “For our sprint, we’re riding against your biggest competition. Maybe it’s someone from work, or maybe it’s someone who doesn’t even know who you are.”

Hands-on adjustments.

Some people love these and some people hate them, so it’s good to ask at the beginning of class if there are injuries or if anyone is uncomfortable with adjustments to please let you know. Things naturally tend to be more hands-on in the fitness industry, but it isn’t for everyone. (When you show up early, you can introduce yourself to participants individually to get their name and check in. It’s easier for someone to say they don’t want to be adjusted during class during a one-on-one conversation instead of in front of a large group.)

What falls flat:

What I refer to as empty cheers.

“WOO!” Is my biggest pet peeve ever. It means nothing, it does nothing.

Tell a bunch of personal stories during class.

Usually no one cares and just wants to get on with the workout.

Constantly making participants feel like they’re doing everything wrong.

No one wants to feel like a failure, especially when they’re putting in the effort to reach a fitness goal. Whether you’re a personal trainer or leading a group fitness class, it’s important that you lift your classes members up, not put them down.

A lack of direction.

When you get a feeling that the instructor doesn’t know what they’re going to do next, or if it’s obvious that they’re winging it. It’s motivating to feel like they have a solid plan for what you’re going to do during the workout.

Saying the same thing over and over again.

An example is constantly saying, “Good job!” in between everything else. (“Good job. Ok we’re going to do burpees now! Good job, now we’re going to hold the plank, good job, keep your core tight, good job.” It’s distracting.) Also, I think it’s nice to switch up the way you phrase things. There are SO many ways to say the same thing, so it helps to eliminate the redundant feeling. (For example, there are so many ways to say, “Power up through your legs, engage your glutes as your spring off the ground, jump up towards the ceiling, use your leg power to explode, jump vertically as high as you can.”)

(Gif source. Bonus points if you have Moira Rose’s vocabulary)

So tell me friends: what does your FAVORITE fitness instructor do to motivate you? Have they said or done something that was especially memorable for you?

Fellow fitness instructor friends: what are your favorite ways to motivate your classes and clients, especially in the online fitness world? Things are HARD right now, especially when we’re used to feeding off the live energy of classes, so I’d love to hear your thoughts and what you’re doing!

xoxo

Week of workouts

Sharing a glimpse of how I structure my weekly workouts.

Hiiiii! How are you? I hope you’re having an amazing morning! We’re at Disneyland today and I can’t wait to ride all of the rides, eat Disney treats, and enjoy some fun memories with my favorite people.

While I won’t be getting in any *official* workouts this week, I’ll definitely be walking 20k steps per day (minus the long drive home). For today’s post, I thought i’d share a little bit about what my workouts have been like lately and how I structure my weeks.

Week of workouts.

It varies week by week, but here are some of the things I like to include:

3 strength classes – I’ll mix it up between F45, pure barre Define (my fave right now!), and Fit Team strength workouts (low-impact modifications)

1-2 hot yoga or barre classes (I teach barre every other week and do about 80% of the workout with the class)

1-2 cardio days on the Peloton and/or Sculpt Society (this link gets you a free trial on the app!)

1-2 days OFF

Week of workouts

Here’s what a week might look like:

Sunday: OFF

Monday: Hot yoga or power yoga

Tuesday: F45 total body or Fit Team total body

Wednesday: Peloton or Sculpt Society

Thursday: F45 legs or Fit Team legs

Friday: pure barre (Define or Classic), or Pilates

Saturday: Hike, Sculpt Society, or off

I also walk Maisey every day (usually 1-2 miles around the neighborhood) or stroll on my walking pad during meetings

You might notice that it’s not a ton of cardio, and not a lot of interval training. I FINALLY feel like I’m in a place where I’m able to push myself a little with cardio again. Cardio releases histamine – it was a trigger for my eyes- and can also deplete you further when you have autoimmune symptoms. I noticed last year that I couldn’t push myself the way I used to because I’d be sore and exhausted for days. I also got sick twice after very hard workouts, which was unusual for me.

This kind of schedule has enabled me to stay active without overdoing it. It’s working for me right now 🙂

I’d love to hear how you structure your week of workouts!

If you need help setting up a workout plan, I have a freebie you can download here.

You can also try Fit Team free here! This is my full wellness hub with new strength workouts each month, a schedule for how to build your wekely plan (and substitute group classes), recipes, meal guides, educational modules, and playlists. Join the team here.

Have a great day and I’ll see ya soon!

EquiLife CBO protocol review

Sharing my experience so far using the EquiLife CBO protocol as part of my gut healing process. You can read more about my journey here.

Hi friends! I hope that you’re having a wonderful week! We’re in California celebrating spring break with the crew. I’ll share some adventures on IG stories and some pics in Friday Faves.

For today’s post, I wanted to chat a bit about my CBO protocol journey now that I’m five weeks into the process. (I can’t believe it’s been this long!!) It was a huge step in my healing journey from eye issues and autoimmune symptoms, since I did some testing and found high levels of bacteria, yeast, and Candida in my gut. You can check out more about my experience here.

CBO is a 12-week protocol, and while it’s not for the faint of heart, I’ve already noticed incredible improvements.

Cbo protocol review 1.

EquiLife CBO protocol review

What is the EquiLife CBO protocol?

The Equilife Candida, Bacteria Optimizer Protocol is thoughtfully crafted and designed to tackle imbalances in gut microbiota, specifically targeting candida, fungal, and yeast overgrowth and bacterial dysbiosis. By harnessing the power of natural ingredients known for their antifungal, antibacterial, and gut-healing properties, this protocol aims to restore harmony within the gut ecosystem. The goal of the CBO protocol is to clean out the *bad* bacteria in your gut, repopulate the good bacteria, and heal and seal the gut lining.

Friendly reminder: I’m not a doctor and this isn’t medical advice. I’m simply sharing my experience with this protocol. As with any dietary or supplement regimen, it’s crucial for individuals to consult with their primary care physician or a qualified healthcare provider before making any changes. This ensures compatibility with existing medical conditions, medications, and individual health needs.

Cbo protocol review 2.

Key Ingredients in the CBO protocol:

Saccharomyces Boulardii: A protective and powerful probiotic.

Berberine: Extracted from various plants like goldenseal and barberry, berberine possesses broad-spectrum antimicrobial properties, effectively combating bacterial overgrowth and restoring microbial balance.

Oregano Oil: Renowned for its antimicrobial prowess, oregano oil contains compounds such as carvacrol and thymol, which exhibit potent antifungal and antibacterial effects, aiding in the eradication of pathogenic organisms in the gut.

Enzymes and Probiotics: This Equilife protocol also includes a blend of digestive enzymes and probiotics to support optimal digestion and gut flora balance. Enzymes facilitate the breakdown and absorption of nutrients, while probiotics replenish beneficial bacteria, fostering a thriving gut environment.

How It Works:

The Equilife Candida, Bacteria Optimizer Protocol operates on a multi-faceted approach to address underlying gut imbalances. Herbs target pathogenic organisms, while enzymes and probiotics support digestive health and microbial diversity. This synergistic action helps alleviate symptoms associated with candida overgrowth and bacterial dysbiosis, promoting overall gut wellness.

Pros:

Comprehensive protocol targeting candida overgrowth and bacterial dysbiosis

Utilizes natural ingredients with antifungal and antibacterial properties

Supports optimal digestion and gut health

May alleviate symptoms such as bloating, digestive discomfort, allergies, autoimmune symptoms like joint pain, skin issues, and fatigue

Developed by Dr. Stephen Cabral – he is my mentor and I’m a huge fan of the products he creates, as well as his messaging and brand

The children’s protocol can be used for children ages 3+

Cons:

Individual responses may vary, and results may take time to manifest

Requires commitment to dietary and lifestyle modifications for optimal efficacy

Not suitable for individuals with certain medical conditions or allergies

The importance of functional testing:

Before embarking on the Equilife Candida, Bacteria Optimizer Protocol, it’s essential for individuals to undergo functional testing to ascertain the root cause of their gut issues. Functional testing provides valuable insights into gut health markers, guiding personalized treatment strategies for optimal results. If you’re interested in testing options, email me (gina@fitnessista.com)

I definitely would not do this protocol without testing first, since it’s expensive and long (12 weeks)

Cbo protocol review 3.

My personal experience:

The biggest thing that kept me from starting this protocol earlier was the suggested eating guidelines.

For optimal efficiency, you have to follow the guidelines, and the biggest kicker for me was:

NO GARLIC OR ONIONS.

Whaaaaat?! I put garlic and onions in EVERYTHING. If a recipe calls for garlic, I double or triple the amount. Two cloves in a recipe? No. They definitely meant six.

This is why I waited until after the holidays, Liv’s birthday trip, and some travel and events we had planned until I was ready to get started. I wanted to be able to control as much as I could, so I waited until it would make the most sense timing-wise. I started it the day after Valentine’s Day (when I went wild at Fleming’s lol) and planned my 21 days to be over by the time we went to Vegas, so I could have a cocktail and a fancy dinner.

If you’re wondering why they don’t recommend garlic or onions, it’s because they’re powerful prebiotics and can feed ALL of the bacteria in your gut: the good, and the bad. You don’t want to be repopulating the same area, so this is why vinegars and fermented foods, as well as certain fruits, are not recommended.

I’m not able to post the full meal guidelines here on the blog, but the first 21 days is basically meats, beans, certain fruits, lots of veggies, and a handful of fats (mostly olive oil, coconut oil, and avocados). After the first 21 days, you can start to implement a weekly “flex” meal to give yourself some nutritional relief, and also start to reintroduce other foods (like eggs, nuts, some condiments, gluten-free grains) while checking for reactions along the way.

The first 21 days were challening, but not unbearable. I realized how much I was craving sugar and how much it was likely keeping me in the situation I was in. After the first 21 days, things get SO much easier. I’m able to have gluten-free oats, rice, needs/seeds/chia, and haven’t had any reactions after adding new foods back in.

Here’s the biggest kicker:

eggs are my favorite food and I haven’t had them regularly for almost 6 months now. Egg whites still spiked my food sensitvity test, and would give me breakouts on my cheeks and chin, so I’ve been avoiding them.

Since I’ve been healing my gut, I’ve been able to add them back into my life without any pimple breakouts or reactions. When we were in Vegas, I had a giant plate of scrambled eggs (they were SO buttery and good!) and nothing happened. It was amazing.

The biggest benefit I’ve noticed is a boost of energy and no more brain fog. I was feeling so distracted and foggy, and this protocol has given me a huge boost in focus, energy, and productivity. The inflammation in my face is completely gone – even when I took the photos for this post a couple of months ago, my cheeks looked puffy! – and I don’t feel bloated or swollen.

I’ve been making the weekly flex meals count, and have enjoyed some amazing sweet treats, a couple of cocktails, and more indulgent meals.

If I feel this good at the almost halfway point, I’m really exxcited to see my progress as I finish up. If you have any questions, or are curious about doing functional testing, please let me know – I’d love to help!

5 casual everyday mom uniforms

Hi friends! How’s the day going? I hope you’re having a wonderful morning. Last night, I went to a super fun event at Creative Tribe with some girlfriends. We got to learn about tarot cards – don’t worry, I won’t be switching my online business lol- and embroidered a tarot card tote bag. Creative Tribe has so many unique crafting events, and it’s BYOB, so you can sip wine out of a Yeti cup. Not a bad way to spend the evening.

Casual Everyday Mom Uniforms

For today’s post, I thought I’d share some of the casual mom uniforms I’ve been wearing lately. I love getting outfit ideas from friends, especially the type of clothes that I can wear everyday and look *put together* for all of the things I do during the day: chase the girls around, work, run errands, play dolls on the living room floor, or kick a soccer ball outside with the kids. I would love to live in lulu 100% of the time, but I find that I feel better and am more productive when I take a little time to get dressed in non-athletic clothes. (This post totally includes one athletic outfit because #reallife)

Mom uniform

1) Everlane button-down with jean shorts and a scarf headband

Mom uniforms

(with these sandals)

I got this headband idea from Jess and it’s fun trendy detail and way to hide the fact that my hair needs a wash.  This shirt was my first time ordering from Everlane and I’ll definitely be trying out more of their pieces.  (I wasn’t sure about sizing and am usually between a 2 and 4 for tops. I ordered a 2 and it worked perfectly. I might try a 4 if it’s something that’s more fitted) It’s the perfect everyday white button-down: lightweight, not too see-through, and washes well. These denim shorts are super comfortable and easy to incorporate into different cute mom outfits.

Mom uniform 2

2) Express black romper with embellished sandals (<— black is gone but the blush is only $40!)

Romper

This romper made me understand how easy it is to just wear black all the time. Before, I could never understand why people had entirely black closets and I totally get it now. Simple, classy, versatile, boom. Plus you can easily throw on a denim jacket if you need an extra layer. These sandals are my go-tos. They match so many things and I always get compliments on them. If you’re looking for more effortless casual outfits, I highly recommend this one.

Mom uniform 3

3) Rails dress with low-top sneakers (<— part of the Anniversary Sale! They’re down to $85 from $130 and public access starts tomorrow)

Rails dress

This is my favorite dress right now! It came in a recent Trunk Club shipment and while it was a bit pricey, I’ve worn it a ton already. (Heads up that it runs a bit big, so if you’re in between sizes, size down.)

Mom uniform 4

4) lululemon shorts with a V-neck tee and APL sneaks

Lulu life

I needed a couple of new pairs of lulu shorts because… my butt has grown haha. So I found these floral ones and really like the print.

Mom uniform 5

5) Athleta shorts and tank with embellished sandals

Athleta outfit

(These ones are in the graphic above since the ones I usually wear are out of stock in black)

It was my first time trying Athleta’s non-athletic clothes and I’m a huge fan. The fabric is light and breathable – a must for Tucson summer – and flattering. I’ve heard their jeans are a dream, too.

6) Tee and jean shorts with sneakers

This is another one of my favorite mom outfits ideas. It’s similar to the first outfit, but even more casual. For this look, I just grab a graphic tee or striped t-shirt, a pair of versatile denim shorts, and a pair of white sneakers. This effortless, yet trendy outfit is what mom style is all about.

7) Shirt dress with sandals

A classic shirt dress is another great option for moms. Whether you’re running errands, doling out snacks at soccer practice, or trying to enjoy a quick dinner date, this dress makes it easy to look stylish and put together.

I also feel like I’m in an awkward phase of life fashion-wise. So often, I find that styles are too young or too mature. I need something in between a mumu and a crop top with a high-waist skirt (<— super cute but would undoubtedly get some raised eyebrows at preschool drop-off).

Where do you get your everyday outfits? Where’s your favorite place to shop? Lately I’ve been ordering everything from Nordstrom for the most part, just because they have so many different things and an awesome return policy. I’m also a huge fan of Trunk Club; many of the outfits above came from those shipments. If you have any favorite stores or online resources for everyday clothes, please let me know!

(Also, do you like these types or posts or nah?)

Hope you have a wonderful day and I’ll see ya in the morning!

Friday Faves 3.22

Hi friends! Happy Friday! How was the week? I can’t believe that we’re already at the end of March and fully into spring! I hope that you have a wonderful weekend ahead. It’s going to be a busy one for our fam. I have two choir performances – local friends, come and see Requiem. If you’d like to attend, I have a discount code I can email to you – and Liv has a dance competition!

I’m going to be singing in between the dance shuffle… wish me luck 🙂

It’s time for the weekly Friday Faves party. This is where I share some of my favorite finds from the week and around the web. I always love to hear about your faves, too, so please shout out something you’re loving in the comments section below.

Friday Faves 3.22

Life:

Vegas fun! The Pilot and I got to enjoy a Vegas weekend together with friends. We originally went up for the basketball tournament, but the Cats lost on Friday night. It was a bummer, but it freed up more time for Vegas adventures 😉

Some highlights from the trip:

We got an upgraded suite at the Venetian, which was a lovely treat.

Little room service pic:

Parents’ night out:

(dress is here from Amazon! Shoes are here)

Dinner at STK:

The famous Flower Drink from the Cosmopolitan:

Flower drink.

We stayed out until 3am, slept in, and then wandered downstairs to the Canyon Ranch spa and had brunch there.

Lentil hummus.

(I had this awesome lentil hummus with veggies, a latte, and a sesame salad with chicken)

Shopping at Fashion Show:

Dinner at the Wynn buffet:

Caviar cone.

(this was EPIC. We need to take the kids!)

The necessary sparkly Vegas dress:

and time chiling the hotel room watching Love is Blind, which also felt like an indulgent treat. It was the perfect mix of friend time, couples time, party time, and relaxation. My cup is very full after such an amazing weekend!

Read, watch, listen:

I haven’t watched Love is Blind in years – since the first season!- and this new season is SO good. 20 minutes in and I was hooked lol.

How to let go of the past and forgive.

Press about our new Beautycounter fragrances. You can get your discovery set here. I’ll also be sharing samples soon!

Fitness + good eats:

Copycat Glow Bowl recipe from Flower Child.

45-minute Pilates workout.

Use this link to try Sculpt Society for free! I take a class at least once per week. They’re the perfect mix of dance cardio and barre-esque strength.

My favorite sweet potato tortillas.

Fashion + beauty:

Some spring Amazon fashion finds!

I have this set in red and black and love it.

These slide sandals.

This Free People dupe romper.

This midi dress would be so cute with slides or white sneakers.

This sleeveless mini dress.

I have this dress in pink and it’s so pretty for spring and summer.

Got a delivery from Beautycounter of some of my favorite staples: the Supreme cream, overnight peel, and lipgloss.

Beautycounter goodies.

Definitely check out this video about the fragrance loophole. I’m so so excited for you to try our new Beautycounter fragrances! (Surprise samples went out to 40 previous Beautycounter clients this week!)

Happy Friday, friends! What are you up to this weekend? What’s one of your faves from the week?
