10.31 Friday Faves

Hi friends! Happy Friday and Happy Halloween! What are your plans tonight? Are you taking the kiddos trick-or-treating or going to any parties? We’re having tacos here at the house with my brother and some friends, trick-or-treating around the neighborhood, and I’m counting down until I can decorate for Christmas.

We carved pumpkins and watched Coco last night:

It’s time for the weekly Friday Faves party. This is where I share some of my favorite finds from the week and around the web. I always love to hear about your faves, too, so please shout out something you’re loving in the comments section below.

10.31 Friday Faves

Fashion + beauty + random:

P’s 10th birthday! This little lady turned 10 this weekend and I can’t even believe. 10 hits hard! It feels like just yesterday that we were taking a hamburger piΓ±ata to the Kleigers’ in the middle of the night. (Her birth story part 1 is here and part 2 is here!)

She’s athletic, brilliant, kind, inquisitive, and silly. She asks great (and sometimes challenging!) questions, genuinely wants to help everyone, and is always down for a game of h-o-r-s-e, a family adventure, or a hike. She fills my heart and cracks me up every single day. Happy happy birthday, P Rose.

We celebrated in the morning with a party for her friends at Jumping Cholla trampoline park, and then in the evening, we celebrated with cake and Hawaiian Bros here with the fam. The Pilot was on a trip, so we Facetimed him for, “Happy Birthday.”

Check out this gorgeous (and delicious) cake!!

It was the perfect celebration.

Moonbird! They sent me this to try and it expands and contracts as you take deep breaths. You can use it on its own, or follow an exercise from the app. I was surprised by how much I enjoy this and what a different it makes in my stress levels. P has loved using it, too, and will ask to use it at least once a day.

They make a version for kids and they have a Black Friday sale coming soon, so I’ll be sure to spread the word!

NEW OneSkin overnight lip mask. It’s thick and luxurious and comes in a sleek, refillable compact. It’s designed to restore smoother, fuller, healthier lips. It contains their OS-01 peptide, which can help revese and prevent the signs of aging. This lip mask also stimulates collagen, elastin, and hyaluronic acid production.

Check it out here and use the code FITNESSISTA15. I’m also obsessed with their body lotion and tinted SPF.

October faves!

It’s always fun to go through analytics and see which products you enjoyed the most that I shared here on the blog.

Here are the bestsellers from October:

This portable humidifier. I never travel without it! Use code FITNESSISTA

This gorgeous satin top and skirt set.

The Organifi hydrogen water tablets! These have been amazing.

My go-to flats (size up).

The perfect high heeled boots.

This classic sleeveless maxi dress.

DNS travel packs.

These wide-leg pants.

The Lumebox! But if you’re thinking about getting one… wait until next week πŸ˜‰

Read, watch, listen:

Friendly reminder to give the teens their candy tonight! Tell them you love their costumes (or non costumes lol) and let them enjoy being a kid as long as possible.

5 online barre classes you must try

Sharing 5 online barre classes you must try and are a fun component to add to your fitness routine.

Hi friends! How are you? I hope that you’re enjoying the week! I’m meeting up with some friends, have client calls, and am taking a yoga class.

For today, I wanted to talk about a workout format that has stood the test of time. It’s something that I’ve loved for many years and always come back to it as a staple in my routine:

barre!

5 online barre classes you must try

I LOVE barre workouts because they give me a little reminder of my dance days of yore, they’re incredibly challenging, yet easier on the joints. There’s minimal impact and I feel like no matter what, I always get a good workout. There are so many great online barre options, so I wanted to share five of my top fives if you’re looking to get in some barre classes at home instead of in the studio. This is an excellent option for my perimenopause or menopause friends who are used to HIIT workouts, but want something that’s low-impact and still an excellent workout.

5 online barre classes you must try

Pure Barre

Pure Barre classes are designed to target specific muscle groups using small, isometric movements. By isolating and working these muscles to the point of fatigue, you can achieve a long, lean physique while improving your flexibility, posture, and overall body alignment. It’s a fun and challenging full body workout.

One of the things I love most about Pure Barre is its inclusivity. Whether you’re a seasoned fitness enthusiast or a beginner, Pure Barre offers modifications and variations to meet you where you are on your fitness journey. The supportive and encouraging environment makes it a welcoming space for all fitness levels and ages.

Why I like Pure Barre:

I feel like these classes are more music-driven, and they feel like the most *classic* barre exercises to me. It includes a mix of pulses, isometric holds, and full-range movements, in addition to core burners, juicy stretches, and challenging series. With a variety of class formats, including Classic, Empower, and Reform, you can mix it up and keep your workouts fresh and exciting.

Pricing: Starts at $9.99/month (billed annually; $29.99 billed monthly) and you also get access to different formats, including Club Pilates and Yoga Six.

Britsbarre

I recently discovered these workouts and have fallen in love with them. They’re classic barre workouts with solid form cues, functional flows, and an awesome burn. Brit Shimansky is a former professional ballerina turned master barre instructor who understands what it’s like to juggle mom life while making fitness a priority.  After spending years teaching and training in NYC, Brit became a mom in 2020, and found that fitting in studio time just wasn’t working anymore. That personal turning point inspired her to launch Britsbarre virtual studio:  a space built by a mom for moms, where movement meets real life. She created short, beat-driven barre and strength classes that are super effective without a huge time commitment.

In these classes, you’ll find traditional barre work: low-impact, high-rep sequences designed to build lean muscle, boost endurance, and revitalize your energy, even on busy days. Brit is also a a certified pre and postnatal trainer, so you can expect lots of great instruction and modification options. The workouts are fully on-demand, many under 30 minutes, making them perfect for busy moms who need something effective, flexible, and engaging. Each class includes alignment-focused instruction, modifications (including pre/postnatal), and options you can take without equipment or in a small space. Equipment for these classes include a mat, band loop, Pilates ball, and dumbbells. Click here to give it a try! All subscriptions include a free 7-day trial.

Sculpt Society

Ok so in all fairness, this isn’t traditional barre, but the strength and sculpt workouts are very barre-esque. I definitely recommend giving it a try if you like barre classes!

Sculpt Society was created by celebrity trainer Megan Roup, and this dynamic fitness method combines dance cardio, sculpting exercises, and targeted workouts to help you achieve your fitness goals and unlock your inner confidence.Sculpt Society is all about finding joy in movement and embracing your body’s natural rhythm. Through high-energy dance cardio routines, you’ll get your heart rate up, burn calories, and boost your cardiovascular fitness. But it’s not just about the cardio—Sculpt Society takes it a step further with sculpting exercises with light weights that target and tone specific muscle groups, helping you improve overall strength and endurance.

Sculpt Society incorporates a variety of exercises and equipment to keep your workouts exciting and effective. From resistance bands and hand weights to sliders and ankle weights, you’ll experience a diverse range of movements that challenge your muscles in new ways. The workouts are designed to activate your entire body, helping you build strength, improve flexibility, and enhance your overall athleticism.

Why I like Sculpt Society:

I really like the design of the workout and Megan Roup’s vibe. She’s encouraging and fun, but doesn’t try too hard to make you laugh. Doesn’t have any silly catch phrases, and just seems like a real person. It’s very refreshing in a world of over-the-top fitness instructors, and the classes are all extremely well done. I have fun, I break a sweat, and I feel challenged.

Pricing: They offer a free trial. You can also use my code GINA25 at this link for 25% off your first month. After that it’s $179.99/year or $19.99 (what I currently pay for my subscription).

Coach Kel’s workouts

I found Coach Kel’s YouTube years ago and love her workouts. They’re a little more ballerina-ish, which I love, and I also like her low-key coaching approach. She has a ton of workouts on her channel and the best part is that they’re freeee. She’s genuinely a great barre instructor. I wish I could add more info here, but I had a hard time finding out more about Coach Kel and her background even though she’s active on social. The good news is that you can check out her workouts for free and see how you like them!

Pricing: Free! She also has an on-demand platform that you can check out here for $19.99/month.

Ballet Beautiful

Flashback to the time when I got to take a class in person! I was shocked by the uniqueness and effectiveness of this format. All you need is a yoga mat to get started.

Here’s a little more about Ballet Beautiful:

Created by professional ballerina and celebrity fitness trainer, Mary Helen Bowers, Ballet Beautiful draws inspiration from the elegant movements and techniques of ballet, incorporating elements of ballet conditioning, Pilates, and yoga. Through a series of precise and controlled movements, you’ll engage your muscles, improve your posture, and work on muscle strength and endurance. You don’t need to have any prior dance experience to enjoy the benefits of these workouts. Whether you’re a beginner or an advanced fitness enthusiast, Ballet Beautiful offers a range of workouts and modifications to meet you where you are on your fitness journey.

Pricing: $39.99 for 1 month, or $90 for 90 days

Have you tried any of the barre classes mentioned above? Which one is your favorite?

Hope you have an amazing day and I’ll see ya soon.

xoxo

Gina

Honorable mention:

Barre3,all about finding balance in every aspect of your life. With a focus on functional movements, the workouts aim to improve strength, flexibility, and stability, while also nurturing your mental well-being. It’s not just about the physical aspect; it’s about connecting with your body and embracing a mindful approach to fitness.

Barre3 classes are a blend of isometric exercises, functional movements, and dynamic stretching. The use of props such as gliders, weights, and balls adds variety and intensity to the workouts, keeping you engaged and continuously challenged.

Why I like bare3:

I love the mindfulness aspect of barre3. There’s a significant emphasis on mind-body connection, as a series of breaths begins and ends each class. I added this as an honorable mention because I don’t gravitate towards these workouts as much as I used to. I feel like there are more dynamic and enjoyable options, which I’ve shared above.

Pricing: 14-day trial trial. $19.99/month billed annually and $29.99/month billed monthly.

7-night Disney Dream Italy and Greece Mediterranean cruise

Sharing a recap of our 7-night Mediterranean cruise (Italy and Greece) on the Disney Dream! This is not sponsored (I wish, lol), but I’m excited to share our experience.

They have a handy little trick when you’re on board a Disney cruise line ship: you have the option to book a placeholder for a future cruise at a slight discount. This way, when you get off the ship, it’s slightly less depressing because you know you’ll be on another one soon. We got off the Disney Dream in Rome a few weeks ago, and already, we can’t wait for our next Disney cruise.

This was Disney cruise #4 (we’ve done Alaska, Bahamas/Caribbean, and Mexico), first one in Europe, and it was our favorite one (so far! – this was written before our recent Disney cruise from Barcelona). It was a combination of the destinations plus the larger ship, which was a literal Dream full of Disney magic.

(We also got to enjoy Rome on either side of our cruise! You can read about our Rome adventures here.)

7-night Disney Dream European cruise

We arrived at the Civitavecchia port via a private car that the hotel booked for us, and it was the quickest and most seamless boarding experience. By 1:30pm, we were at the pool, watching the kiddos swim and drinking cocktails with friends. (A pro tip from one of our good friends: pack your swim gear in a tote bag and check everything else. Your room won’t be ready yet, so you can head straight to the pool. It’s the least busy it will be for the entire trip and after a couple of hours, your room will be ready with all of your luggage waiting for you outside the door.)

We had lunch from Cabanas (the buffet) and ate it by the pool, checked out our room, and then got changed for the Muster Drill, Sail-A-Wave party and dinner.

On Disney cruises, you’re on a dining rotation. You get the early (6pm) or late (8pm) seating, and alternate restaurants each evening. You can opt out of your more formal dining to have a quick bite or room service instead, but no matter what, your table will be waiting for you. You also have the same server and assistant server each night. We had the early seating, and dined at all of the major restaurants. The menus were all very similar to previous cruises and was the beautifully-plated Disney fare we love. πŸ™‚

You can also order whatever you want. You can pick from their 4-course menu, or if you’d like, order two appetizers, two entrees, etc. In a Disney Cruise Facebook group, a suggestion was to ask the server to ask the cooks if they’d mind making a family-style meal from their home country. They said they’ve had the best Indian food and curries of their lives this way, along with naan and rice. We haven’t tried this yet – I feel bad that we’d be inconveniencing them – but I’ve been curious about trying it.

Our favorite is Animator’s Palate, which they have on all of the ships we’ve seen (Dream, Wonder, and Magic). You draw a person on your placemat, and during the meal, they have a *show* in which all of animations come to life on large screens throughout the restaurant, dancing to the music, and added to famous Disney scenes and Disney characters.

On this particular cruise, we stopped in at several ports of call for amazing shore excursions: Naples, Mykonos, Santorini, and Chania, and we had planned excursions in Naples and Mykonos. The rest of the time we enjoying exploring the ports on our own and living our best cruise lives on the ship.

Excursion 1: Positano, Sorrento, and Pompeii

This was about a 10-hour excursion, which was definitely a long one for the kiddos, but so worth it. Also, in the middle, we were treated to an epic 4-course meal with wine pairings, overlooking the ocean. It was one of the best port adventures.

Positano

Positano is one of my favorite places in the entire world, so of course, I couldn’t wait to show the girls. I only wish that we had more time there! We had the chance to get a chocolate croissant and coffee, put our feet in the ocean (it was so warm and lovely), and do a little bit of shopping. (Highly recommend Luisa Positano! Liv and I each got dresses from there and they’re so gorgeous and unique.) It was probably a good thing that we were on limited time, because I wanted to buy everything. πŸ˜‰

Sorrento

After Positano, we were back on the bus for a longer stop in Sorrento. It was my first time here in another one of Italy’s beautiful historic cities, and while it had the Positano feel, it was a bit more bustling, especially on the main street. We shopped and walked around, grabbed a gelato, and then met with our tour group for an Italian meal that I’ll never forget. The whole family loved it.

This is where we had the famous zucchini pasta, along with chicken, salad, bread, and a chocolate hazelnut mousse dessert.

The meal was paired with sparkling wine, white wine, red wine, and a dessert wine. Pretty much everyone in our tour group snoozed for the entire ride to Pompeii.

Pompeii

Pompeii was SO cool. It was fascinating to see such a well-preserved ancient city, in addition to the various aspects of life in Pompeii, like the bakery, bathhouses, etc. By this point, the kids were pretty tired, but they rallied! We learned a lot during the guided tour, and from here, it was only 45 minutes back to the cruise ship.

Excursion 2: Super Paradise Beach Day in Mykonos

This was our favorite excursion, one of the highlights of the trips.. Super Paradise Beach is a private beach club, with relaxing loungers, umbrellas, a full menu, and a peaceful beach with bright, turquoise waters. It’s also partially blocked from the intense winds that can affect Mykonos. If you’re on this or another one of the Greek isles cruises, it’s worth the stop.

The funny thing was that our Naples excursion was so time-specific – we knew exactly when we needed to be back on the bus or at a certain meeting point- and for this beach excursion, the guide was like, “Eh. Have fun and I’ll let you know when we need to get ready to leave.”

We ended up being there for about 3 hours, which was the perfect amount of time. We all swam, the girls played in the sand and waves, and we proceeded to order half of the things on the menu.

(My fave Vuori suit)

A sandwich was included with our excursion, but I’m petty sure our Greek friends would disown us if we ate a turkey sandwich in their homeland.

Before we left, they gave us a list of everything to order while we were in Greece. The Pilot wrote down everything phonetically so we’d be able to pronounce it, like, “Gotta lotta booty yo.” I think we made them proud; we tried almost everything they suggested between our time in Mykonos and Chania. The food was out of this world incredible. So fresh, vibrant, and delicious. I highly, highly recommend the pastitsio, which is like a spaghetti lasagna with cheesy foam on top.

(We also had grilled octopus, salad, cooked garlicky greens, stuffed grape leaves, beef patties, and little doughnuts)

Santorini:

In Santorini, we didn’t end up doing much. It’s on my travel itineraries, where you can see the famous white buildings with the blue domes in Oia, but it was so hot, and the kids were melting. It’s kind of an unusual port, too. You take a smaller tender boat to the base of the port, where you take a cable car up the steep hill to the town of Fira (lots of shopping and restaurants). You can also walk up stairs to the top, but there are 400+, which may not be realistic for small children or those with mobility difficulties. Our plan was to take the cable car UP, but walk down the stairs at the end of the day.

The cable car line tends to be extremely long, without much shade. The line was easily 200+ when we got there and moving very slowly. The girls were wearing their neck fans and we were constantly pouring water on them, and they were too hot, so we ended up heading back.  We’ll have to catch the natural wonders of this island on another visit.

If you’re stopping in Santorini in mid-June or July, I’d recommend booking an excursion with motor coach transfer so you don’t have to deal with the cable car line. Or bring lots of water + an umbrella, or brave the stairs!

(I had an iced tea at the cafe at the bottom of the port. I mentioned this in a previous post, but the iced tea in Greece is INSANE. Whether it’s brewed in-house, or in a can, it’s truly something special. Many flavors are infused with lemongrass, ginger, or fruit, like cherry, and lightly sweet and refreshing. Who knew I’d dream about Greece iced tea forever and ever??)

The owner also brought us shots of ouza with our bill, ice creams for everyone, and sent us back to the ship with a giant piece of baklava to-go.

Chania:

In Chania, we ended up exploring on our own, which was ideal. We followed a tour guide group into Old Town, which was lined with small shops, kiosks, restaurants, and a gorgeous view of the bay.

We bought souvenirs and jewelry, and had another legendary lunch + more of the best idea tea.

(The sardines were SO zesty and flavorful)

Disney Cruise Dream dining and activities

On the ship, we enjoyed all of the usual Disney cruise offerings: the live shows – Beauty and the Beast was phenomenal – movies, character greetings, Bingo, gym, kid’s club, swimming, endless ice cream cones and Mickey bars, whiskey tastings, and all of the wonderful restaurants.

The best part was that we traveled with friends. The girls had built-in buddies, and so did the adults πŸ˜‰ It definitely makes the experience even more fun!

Disney really goes above and beyond when it comes to guest experience, cleanliness, and food quality. If you guys have any questions about the Disney cruise experience, please let me know! I’ve got tons of other great tips like a hassle-free debarkation (departure) to make your Disney fantasy come to life on the high seas.

(the best cruise ship magnets are on Etsy!)

So, tell me, friends: are you a cruise fan or not-so-much? Have you done a Disney cruise??

Trying to figure out which one we should do next!! We’d still love to see Spain, Iceland, Athens, Florence, Norway, England, Ireland, France…the list goes on! So many potential incredible voyages (not to mention so many inland possibilities like Germany or Northern Europe).

xo

Fall juice date

Catching up with my internet besties for a little juice date.

Hi friends! How are you? I hope that you’re having a lovely week so far! I’m here back in homeschool and mom mode after my trip, but looking forward to catching a hot yoga class this afternoon.

It’s been a little while since we’ve had a juice date, so I’d love to chat about what’s been going on and see what’s happening in your life! So grab your favorite drink and let’s catch up a bit, shall we??

If we were having juice right now…

I’d want to hear about what you’ve been up to! Is fall crazy for you, too? What are your kids going to be for Halloween? Any fall or holiday travel plans?

I have a trip to LA coming up in a couple of weeks that I’m looking forward to, and other than that, we don’t have any travel scheduled right now. (Side note: we’re hosting a meetup on November 13th so if you’re close to the Manhattan Beach area and would like to join, let me know, and I’ll send ya the details!)

I like to always know when our next trip is happening – it gives me something to look forward to while I’m hustling, which I heard is a trauma response but I’m ignoring that – so I’m crossing my fingers that we can book a Disney cruise or something fun soon-ish. The girls are begging to go to Korea and Japan, so I’m thinking that will be our next big trip, after Liv’s 8th grade graduation. If you have any recs, please let me know!! This is totally new territory for me. (And Liv is a little bit perplexed at the fact that we could have lived in Korea many times for the military, but opted for other PCS top picks instead.)

For Halloween, Liv is a boxer with her friend (cute athletic wear and boxing gloves) and P is one of those inflatable costumes that looks like an alien is caryring you. P turned 10 on Sunday and I can’t even believe it!

I’d want to know what you’ve been reading/watching/enjoying lately. I’m LOVING this season of Dancing with the Stars and The Voice. I watch DWTS with the kids – they like it, too!- and The Voice a couple of times a week while I walk on the walking pad. I’m reading Frozen River right now — it’s intense and I’m enjoying it so far.

I’d want to hear about how you’re doing… like how you’re really doing. No fluff; the real deal. I’d tell you that we’re in an interesting season. We’re still trying to navigate the Pilot’s travel schedule with my work life and homeschooling. I’d also admit that homeschooling is amazing, but it’s not always easy. I had these lovely ideas of all of the field trips we’d take and the crafts we’d do, but the reality is that by the time we finish everything and have lunch, I’m lucky to get one chore done and wrap up a couple of work tasks before we have to pick up Liv and head into the afterschool activities/homework/dinner shuffle.

I know we’ll find our balance eventually. The good news is that she’s thriving academically and the Pilot helps with homeschool stuff when he’s in town. This is when I batch client calls and podcast interviews. It was always meant to be a bridge – not a forever thing unless that’s what it needed to be – and she’s started to say that she misses her school friends. We’ll see what ends up happening, but we’re taking it day by day.

Just wanted to be honest because online we see a ton of sourdough life-on-the-farm harvest from the garden, gather the eggs, milk the cow, romanticized version of homeschool, but sometimes it’s not always like that. πŸ˜‰

I’d tell you about the Reimagining Health Summit and how excited I feel after it. These types of conferences always light a fire in my soul, but this one felt especially impactful. I feel really honored that I was chosen to speak on the Health Coach Expert panel with a few of my best Integrative Health Practitioner friends (and women whom I admire so much), and thank you to your amazing support, I was #7 out of over 5,000 IHPs in sales for our 100-day challenge. (I was #7 last year, too!) I’m feeling a nudge for the next step and what I’m supposed to do, and am excited to see it unfold. When I first interviewed Dr. Cabral for my podcast years ago, I knew that he was creating something truly amazing, and I’m beyond pumped to be a small part of the EquiLife and IHP mission.

I’d also ask you about your thoughts on peptides, especially GLP-1/GIP. I know this can be an intense topic, but I’m always curious to hear what my friends think about anything in the health/wellness space. I’ve always loved certain peptides and their abilities – like collagen peptides, the OneSkin products I use every day, glutathione, and NAD+ – but was a hard no on GLP-1s for a long time. I’ve learned more, and have changed my mind, especially when it comes to microdosing.

To my knowledge, there aren’t any large studies when it comes to microdosing; GLP-1s have been around a long time but the related studies are based on larger, therapeutic doses. Quite a few health experts I trust have spoken about longevity benefits from microdosing.

If I end up giving it a try, I’ll definitely report back because I’ve heard it can be beneficial for blood sugar response, inflammation (I’m feeling extra inflamed right now), and perimenopause. I don’t think you should depend on these things – and that you should test to see what underlying imabalances are happening – but can possibly be a helpful lever if you’re feeling stuck.

I’d watch to know if you’ve tried any good recipes lately and what you’re making for dinner tonight. I made this beef bowl for the first time about a month ago, and the girls request it fairly often. It’s SO good and satisfying! I started adding artichokes to it, too. The sauce + the beef and veggie mixture is amaaaazing.

I’d also ask if you want to split a couple of gluten-free treats with me πŸ˜‰

Thanks for catching up today, friends, and for being here. Have a wonderful day and I’ll see ya soon!

Turkey Bacon Egg Cups (gluten-free, dairy free)

These turkey bacon egg muffin cups are a perfect make-ahead breakfast option for busy school mornings. You can have a healthy, protein-based breakfast on the table in 5 minutes with minimal prep, and they’re dairy free and gluten-free. Oh, and you’ll love the flavor.

We’re definitely back into busy school morning mode around here. Let us rejoice the fact that we’ve made it a week without having to check in late at the office. Let’s see how long this lasts. Something that helps a ton: prepping as much as I can in advance. When I make dinner at night, I also take that time to pack lunches and snacks for the following day. Before we go to bed, I set out clothes (down to the socks and hair bows they’ll wear), water bottles, and backpacks, and make sure any paperwork or homework is in backpacks ready to go. For breakfast, things are as quick as possible around here. We do a lot of instant or baked oatmeal, omelets, breakfast cookies, pancakes or waffles that I make over the weekend and freeze in an airtight container or freezer baggie for easy storage, and hard-boiled eggs  – anything that cuts down on prep time.

I wanted to switch up our egg game a bit, and instead of making the usual casserole, I thought I’d do some egg muffins using a traditional muffin tin. They’re a little “cuter” than a square cut out of a casserole dish (and let’s be real, kids are more likely to eat food if it’s a bit of a novelty or something cute/different) and the best part is that you can batch these and freeze them to easily reheat throughout the week. Any nutrition for the kids is a win.

(Pin for the next time you need bfast ideas!)

Just sautΓ© the veggies and turkey bacon, mix up the eggs (whole eggs or egg whites), combine, scoop, bake, done.

Turkey bacon kale and cheese egg muffins 3

If anything, you need to make these just for this aroma right here. There’s something pretty magical about garlic, turkey bacon, and onion.

Turkey bacon kale and cheese egg muffins

Here’s the recipe if you’d like to give them a try! Feel free to customize with any veggies you like such as mushrooms or a red bell pepper. My veggie friends could easily replace the turkey bacon with some Beyond Meat sausage and they would be bomb dot com.

These turkey bacon egg muffins are a perfect make-ahead breakfast option for busy school mornings. You can have a healthy breakfast on the table in 10 minutes total time, and they’re dairy free and gluten-free.

  • Author: Gina Harney

Ingredients

1/2 sweet onion, diced

3 cloves of garlic, minced

6 slices of turkey bacon (or one Beyond Meat sausage link)

2 cup kale of spinach (or 1 cup chopped, cooked broccoli)

Pinch of nutmeg

6 eggs

3 oz shredded cheddar cheese (I used almond cheese from Trader Joe’s)

1/4 cup almond milk

1/2 teaspoon baking powder

2 tablespoons flour (I used gluten-free baking blend)

Salt and black pepper to taste

Instructions

Preheat the oven to 350 and spray a standard muffin pan generously with nonstick cooking spray.

In a large pan with a little olive oil, heat the onion, garlic, and turkey bacon until fragrant and the bacon (or sausage) is cooked. Wilt in the kale and season well with salt and pepper. Set aside.

In a mixing bowl, combine the eggs, nutmeg, cheese, almond milk, salt, baking powder, and flour. Whisk well, and then stir in the cheese and season with a little salt.

Add the turkey bacon mixture to the egg mixture and stir to combine.

Using an ice cream scoop, divide evenly into the 12 muffin pan spots.

Bake for about 20 minutes, until set and slightly golden.

Allow to cool completely before freezing. To reheat from frozen, microwave for 30-40 seconds. Enjoy your egg breakfast cups!

Note: I used an ice cream scoop to pour into the muffin pan and it made things way easier. You can use muffin liners, but I find that egg muffins stick more to these and are a pain to remove if you freeze them.

Tell me, friends: what’s your favorite breakfast for busy mornings?

From Vacation Wake-Up to Sustainable Fat Loss: Matt’s 30‑Pound Transformation

In less than a year, our client Matt lost 31.5 pounds and shrunk his waist by over 20 cm (nearly 8 inches).

But it wasn’t magic.

Sometimes it takes seeing yourself through a different lens to spark real change.

For Matt, that moment came during a Bali vacation in May. Looking at his photos, he knew something had to shift. With his 40th birthday on the horizon, he set an ambitious goal: to get into the best shape of his life.

“I’ve always been the guy who was in the gym,” Matt reflects. “Lifting with no real purpose and doing cardio—I called that a day.” But those vacation photos revealed a truth he couldn’t ignore. Despite his consistent gym presence, the results weren’t matching his efforts.

What Sparked Matt’s Sustainable Fat Loss Journey

Matt’s fitness journey began long before his Bali revelation.

At his heaviest in high school, he weighed nearly 300 pounds. By age 25, he’d lost 110 pounds and maintained a weight between 180-190 pounds. He even reached 168 pounds at one point, but as he describes it, he was “skinny fat”—the scale showed progress, but the mirror told a different story.

And despite his regular gym attendance, Matt’s workouts lacked structure. “I was your typical gym bro. Do Bis, Chest and Traps, and you’re good was my mindset.”

The frustration with plateaued progress set the stage for a change in approach—one that would finally align his efforts with his goals.

After interviewing several coaches, he found Born Fitness offered something different—a genuine investment in his success rather than treating him as just another client.

“I essentially did a Carrie Underwood and said, ‘Take the wheel!'” Matt recalls.

How Coaching Helped Matt Break Through His Fat Loss Plateau

One of the first things Matt committed to was tracking his food intake using MyFitnessPal.

We didn’t take a restrictive approach or eliminate entire food groups. Instead, the focus was on consistently hitting calorie and protein targets each day. That’s it. While you’ll likely need to adjust your calorie goals throughout the fat loss process, this simple approach helps you avoid overwhelm.

And rather than aiming for perfection, we emphasized awareness. For Matt, that meant getting a better sense of portion sizes and being more intentional with meals.

What about his workouts?

Matt came in with a classic “gym bro” approach—chest day, arm day, repeat. What he didn’t have was a structured, progressive plan.

We changed that.

Each 4-6 weeks, Matt followed a fresh training phase. Every plan was customized, but the consistent themes were:

  • Full-body or upper lower split sessions 3–4x per week to train more muscle more often
  • Progressive overload (increase weight, reps, or control over time)
  • Conditioning finishers (sleds, circuits, intervals) to boost calorie burn without adding hours of cardio

This combination gave Matt the right amount of challenge without overtraining. He wasn’t left guessing what to do—and that structure freed him to focus on execution.

The result: For the first time, nutrition and training worked together, instead of against him. And that alignment unlocked progress he hadn’t seen in years.

As of June 2025, Matt’s results speak for themselves.

His weight dropped from 192.1 pounds to 160.6 pounds. His waist measurement decreased from 100.3 cm to 79.4 cm. That’s more than 30 pounds of fat loss and a full wardrobe transformation.

His strength skyrocketed—going from zero to three unassisted pull-ups and increasing his incline bench weights by over 60%.

But the numbers only tell part of Matt’s story.

For the first time, he’s shopping in the small size section—a milestone he never imagined possible. “I don’t say small in a way that means that I lost muscle. My strength has never been higher, but now clothes are fitting in ways that I never dreamed of.”

From Quick Fixes to Lasting Results

His relationship with food transformed too.

Instead of restrictive dieting, he learned to make smarter choices while still enjoying his favorites. “She doesn’t tell me to stop having Taco Bell,” Matt says about Coach Natalie, “but she would tell me ‘How can I make this healthier but still enjoy this?'”

This balanced approach has made his new lifestyle sustainable and enjoyable rather than feeling like a temporary fix.

On his 40th birthday, Matt sent this message:

Matt’s transformation didn’t happen overnight—but it happened because he stopped winging it and found a plan that worked for him.

If you’re stuck trying to do this on your own and want the kind of structure and support Matt found, our coaching might be a fit for you.
